8 January (UPI) On Sunday, a tsunami warning was issued for nearby islands after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake jolted the Pacific country of Vanuatu.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around 11:32 p.m. local time, 15 miles from Port Olry and at a depth of 17 miles. Vanuatu is located 933 nautical miles from the coast of Australia and 606 nautical miles east of the Solomon Islands.

Vanuatu is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean that frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

A tsunami warning for coasts within 186 miles of the earthquake was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but it was later withdrawn.

There were no initial reports of injuries or damage.
