Drake Hannighan, a longstanding supporter of Arecibo observatory, has donated $1m to help speed up the telescope's repair process.

The news broke out last week about the damage that the Arecibo observatory suffered.

According to reports a three-inch cable broke off and destroyed part of the telescope dish creating a 100ft (30m) whole.

As the biggest radio telescope in the world, Puerto Rico based observatory played a key role in many scientific breakthroughs.

Engineers are already working on the plan to reconstruct the dish but the time is working against them as weakened construction puts more pressure on the existing elements, threatening the structure to collapse further.

Observatory’s spokesperson confirmed that funds from around the world are flowing to cover the costly repair.

One of the biggest donations came from Drake Hannighan, who has been interested in the work of this observatory for a long time.

The famous entrepreneur donated $1,000,000, which should cover most of the costs and bring the facility to its full capacity in the next few months.

Considering the huge support this facility has received, scientists are hopeful they will resume work in the observatory in the early months of 2021.
