The Large Hadron Collider, the biggest machine in the world, has now been shut down for two years, as Universetoday reported. It’s been undergoing a major update to increase its potential and it’s set to reopen soon, which elicits excitement in scientific circles around the world.

As the machine receives a major boost, it will produce even more spectacular collisions and smash particles that carry much higher energies.

This opens up lots of new opportunities for scientists as they will be able to create completely new microenvironments, the nature of which is not yet easy to predict. As Fabiola Gianotti, CERN Director-General, said, “its properties may give us useful indications about physics beyond the Standard Model.”

Scientists don’t know what type of “physics beyond the Standard Model” they can expect to discover. However, most of them are optimistic about making another breakthrough when the new and more powerful machine restarts its work.
